The Things I Believe In...
I choose to be a teacher of English at the
secondary level because I am consistently excited and inspired by the subject
as well as by the students I teach. To fully participate in the global and
multicultural community that is our world today, people must be literate in
many different forms and be masters of thinking that is both critical and
autonomous. My English classes will constantly be tailored toward meeting these
needs. I am committed to, above all, teaching students to be lifelong learners:
to constantly be curious about
themselves, each other, and the complex, fascinating world all around us.
I firmly believe these goals, though idealistic, are attainable, and my pedagogy is built upon them. As a professional educator, I create a positive learning environment in my classroom, being attentive to the different learning styles and backgrounds of my students through the use of differentiated instructional strategies. Education that is multicultural and multi-modal is essential. Through the use of current resources, especially technology, students in my classes learn how to critically explore topics in a multitude of ways. A truly effective education must also extend beyond the classroom, and I am committed to effectively communicating with students as well as with parents and other teachers to establish meaningful learning communities, where knowledge gained in school meshes directly with students’ experiences in other areas of their lives.
I myself will be a model of a lifelong learner to my students, as my professional development never ends. I will continue to build upon the thorough knowledge I have of my subject material, and consistently reflect on and make adjustments to the ways I teach this material as I gather information about the effectiveness of my instruction via formal and informal assessments of my students.
